can (6 ounces) Italian Paste with Italian seasonings

tbsp softened cream cheese

tbsp chopped fresh basil or 2 tsp dried basil leaves

loaf (1 pound) Italian bread, sliced 1/4 inch thick
8
ounces mozzarella cheese, thinly sliced
Whole basil leaves (optional)
Freshly ground black pepper (optional)
Directions

Combine tomato paste, cream cheese and chopped basil in a small bowl.

Toast bread slices on ungreased baking sheet under broiler, 6 to 8 inches from heat, turning after 1 minute, until lightly browned on both sides; remove from broiler.

Spread 2 teaspoons tomato mixture onto each toasted bread slice; top with 1 slice (about 1/4 ounce) mozzarella cheese.

Broil 6 to 8 inches from heat for 1 to 2 minutes or until cheese begins to melt. Top with whole basil leaves and pepper, if desired.
