Ingredients

1/4
c. shortening
1/2
c. sugar
1
egg, beaten
3/4
c. flour
1
tsp. baking powder
1/8
tsp. baking soda
1/8
tsp. salt
1/2
c. milk

Directions

1.
Cream together shortening, sugar and eggs.
2.
Mix together flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt.
3.
Add this mixture to the shortening mixture alternately with the milk.
4.
Pour the batter in a greased 9 x 9 inch pan.
5.
Place large can drained (or 3 to 4 cups of fresh) fruit or berris on top of batter.
6.
Sprinkle with: 1/4 c. sugar, 1/4 c. syrup or honey
7.
2 tbsp. butter.
8.
Pour3/4 cup boiling water on top.
9.
Bake on lower rack at 400 degrees about 45 minutes or until done.
