Great food - long waits
So this is one of the few places where you can get truly good and authentic mexican food. However here is the huge downside: it is amazingly popular. If you go on a weekend evening the wait will be at least two hours. It's also a really crowded area where all the shops are located on south congresss. So if you're going to go, try not to go during peak hours.

I guess I am missing something, because I don't get why Guero's is on everyone's "best thing in austin" lists. The food is decent, don't get me wrong, but there are so many OTHER great places to go for good margaritas and tacos.
That said, the location is excellent, I love the setting and the people-watching is terrific. The salsa bar and brick walls add the right touch, and it's pretty cool how you can watch tacos being made by hand.
So...if you're looking for a place to see-and-be-seen, Guero's is great. Looking for ooey, gooey, yummy Tex-Mex and margaritas? Try Polvo's or El Chile or even Chuy's.
