Located in Evanston (just a stones throw away from Chicago), Merle’s provides Chicagoans an opportunity to get some really good, authentic BBQ. From the second you walk into the place, you feel as though you’ve been transported south of the Mason-Dixon line. The walls are covered in BBQ related collectibles and southern memorabilia. Of course, you didn’t come here for the memorabilia. You came for the food! I have always forgone appetizers as the size of the entrees is rather large and filling. When you consider the entrees, I don’t think you can go wrong. Whether it is ribs (Chicago or St. Louis style), rib tips, pulled pork/beef, or brisket, all of the BBQ here is great. They don’t smother the meat in sauce, so it gives you the chance to really taste the BBQ and then add your favorite sauce to taste. They only offer two sauces at the table: spicy and sweet. You definitely can’t go wrong with either! If you are thinking about the pulled pork or beef, I would recommend going with the platter rather than the sandwich. While the sandwich is good, you get more of the side dishes that are fan favorites. Make sure you try the cornbread and mac and cheese. They are both to die for! They also have other side dishes which are equally delicious, but you only get to choose two. I can’t say I have ever made it to dessert at Merle’s. The entrees are so large and filling that I am always stuffed at the conclusion of the meal. If you ever find yourself in Evanston, make sure you take a trip to Merle’s.
