If you're looking for the greatest sushi bar this side of the mississippi...no joke...then hit up Iowa City's Takanami Restaurant. The rolls are brilliantly prepared and much more savory than other sushi joints in the area. Located downtown it makes for a nice meal! Affordable too! Enjoy.
Takanami is the place to go if you're looking for Japanese downtown. I'm particularly fond of their lunch menu which features a range of lunch bento boxes running from $8-12. The bento boxes come with soup, salad, a few pieces of a maki roll, rice, and a main entree. I've had several of these and all of them were fantastic. The decor here is really nice and the service is excellent. The dinner menu can get a bit pricey, but the lunch menu has some great deals.
I have only eaten breakfast here but I've heard the lunch is good too. The breakfast menu has the most amazing assortment of 3 egg omlets, stuffed full of cheese and other select ingredients. They also have traditional breakfasts and some really delicious hash browns, as well. I've never had a better breakfast with a better value. When's the last time you had leftovers from breakfast out? I haven't finished a meal here yet. You could easily feed a hungry bear with one plate of food. Update: I'm so lost now without my omlettes. They've quit serving breakfast and have gone to a buffet lunch. They're serving dinner two or three evenings a week too. I'll have to try these sometime.
