The chicken (Gallus gallus, sometimes G. gallus domesticus) is a domesticated fowl. Recent evidence suggests that domestication of the chicken was under way in Vietnam over 10,000 years ago.[1] Until this discovery, conventional wisdom held that the chicken was domesticated in India.[1]

Some genetic research has suggested that the bird likely descended from both Red and the Grey Junglefowl (G. sonneratii). Although hybrids of both wild types usually tend toward sterility, recent genetic work has revealed that the genotype for yellow skin present in the domestic fowl is not present in what is otherwise its closest kin, the Red Junglefowl. It is deemed most likely, then, that the yellow skin trait in domestic birds originated in the Grey Junglefowl.

The chicken is one of the most common and widespread domestic animals. With a population of more than 24 billion in 2003, there are more chickens in the world than any other bird. Humans keep chickens primarily as a source of food, consuming both their meat and their eggs.

I recently had lunch at Carino's for the first time, and boy, was I pleasantly surprised. Even though there were about 12 of us in our party, our meal was served in a timely manner and all at once, with all the food being hot and smelling great. The bread was crusty and the accompanying saucers of olive-garlic dipping oil were wonderful. I only had their soup of the day--some sort of yummy bean and vegetable soup with grated parmesan on top- and even though I was told I could have unlimited refills, the bread and oil and 1 large bowl filled me up. One of my lunch partners had the chicken sandwitch (home-made bread!), which came with homemade potato chips. I had some, and they were marvelous! Thick and crunchy but not oily, the potato taste really came through. Their lunch items start at around $2.99 (my soup), and go up to $14.99 for the seafood. The average dinner entree costs around $8 to $9, and comes with all the salad you want plus the bread and dipping oil. I've since had the chance to eat at the new Olive Garden that just opened up here in Idaho Falls, and I can tell you, the food at Carino's was fresher-tasting and I liked the prices a lot better, too! I difinitly plan on coming back.
