Going by the food and service, Banana Leaf seems to be nothing but an upmarket udipi.
Our first visit few weeks back was on a Saturday lunch time and we ordered appams to go with veg malabar curry, paneer gassi and buttermilk. While we enjoyed the veg malabar curry and appams the paneer gassi was like a forced north Indian entry on a south Indian banana leaf.
The buttermilk was spiced with ginger and green chillies masala which was not mentioned in the description of the menu so one expected plain buttermilk as the one which is spiced should be known as masala buttermilk.
The next visit happened last week when we were again passing by and just wanted to grab a bite. As my partner was fasting it was just me left to order and i decided to have just tomato rice and buttermilk. This time i asked for the buttermilk to be kept plain and not to be spiced which is how it came. I had also ordered for the tomato rice to be not spicy and was assured that it would be minimum spices that would be used but when i took the first bite it was hot and spicy! The tomato rice was full of small pieces of green chillies along with whole red chillies too despite the request and the assurance that it would come non-spicy.
We asked for the captain who had taken our order all the time sniffing and asking for tissues to wipe down the spicy flow of tears! After asking 4-5 people there was no sign of the captain and after 10 minutes or so we ultimately asked for the bill and that is when he appeared.
We left the place without eating and the only solace was that the captain agreed to waive off the bill when we told him the problem and showed him all the chillies in the tomato rice!
