Curly’s brings the fake meat out on the table, for better or for worse. In most cases, it’s for the better. With the close of Veggie Castle in Midwood, Curly’s now inherits the title of Best Veggie Burger in New York, and there aren’t many better than their buffalo burger out there. The Sloppy Joe does everything right, and the signature curly fries always hit the spot. As far as a simple Burger & Fries joint gets for NYC, there isn’t one better at the Veggie version than Curly’s (I’m talkin’ to you, Shake Shack!). As far as a nice little greasy spoon, Curly’s succeeds as well. Breakfast anytime is always welcome, and their take on Chilaquiles and Pancakes & sausage make a nice meal anytime. The Mexican fare is good as well, though I don’t know what the word of mouth power of the Mission Burrito is when there are so many other great mission style burritos in the EV. The rare missteps are the Dagwood style Fake Meat on Fake Meat on Fake Meat sandwiches. When I worked in a kitchen we called this sandwich “The Heartstopper,” and that was with real meat, though I don’t know that Curly’s version of the Cuban sandwich or FauxPhilly Cheesesteak don’t have just the artery clogging power that their meaty cousins so firmly possess. Missteps like this are so rare, though, and mostly you can’t go wrong…at least I think so. The menu is so long I’ve barely cracked it, and I’ve been going here religiously for over 3 years. Nice, if small, selection of wines & beers, and the waitstaff is always nice & fast enough. The only knock on the location is it’s lack of size (5 tables? Maximum 6), so if it’s full it’ll be full for awhile. I recommend if Curly’s is full, and you’re craving a burger & fries, go 1 block over to 119, have a drink, come back & have a seat.
