Kate's Joint has seen it's better days, but it's still the best place in this area of the EV for veggie comfort food. The Southern Fried Cutlet sandwich still rocks, and reminds me of the real thing. Best fake chicken wings you'll ever have, and the disco fries are pretty good as well. Kate's is a weird vegetarian restaurant, in that the only thing on the menu I wholly do NOT recommend is the veggie burger (the patty is...off). And being a "soul food" joint really negates the whole healthiness stereotype that most folks will have when thinking about vegetarian food. Deep fried & delicious, but definitely not healthy. I dig the bar and the bartenders are always really nice & helpful. Great drink specials for Happy Hour. Atmosphere is bland but cool, music is spotty but can be great (and can be incredibly bad). Overall, though, I still go frequently, and I live in Brooklyn. No other veggie place really nails the fake southern cookin' as well. It's great for satisfying that need for home cooked comfort food, veggie or no.

    I Ate:

    • The Taco: great taco salad, minus the bowl. ($9)
    • Buffalo UnChicken Wings: savory, spicy & awesome ($6)
    • Southern Fried Cutlet Sandwich: really really good ($9)
    • Sloppy Josephine: not the best fake sloppy Joe in the EV ($8)
    • El Dawgo Ranchero: awesome idea. Onion Rings, BBQ & a Hot Dog. Perfect. ($9)
    • UnTurkey Club: amazingly like a regular club sandwich, frilly toothpicks & all ($8)
    • Not Reuben Sandwich: if you're craving a reuben, it'll hit the spot. If no, maybe steer elsewhere. ($9)

If you thought vegan and vegetarian food always meant healthy, Kate's Joint brilliantly proves you wrong. If you're a vegetarian who misses fried calamari, buffalo chicken wings, chicken nuggets, and popcorn shrimp, you can get your vegetarian version here. The Buffalo UnChicken Wings are my favorite and satisfy my cravings. The service is decent, not the best, but it's essentially a diner, so I don't have high expectations. Kind of dark inside, not the nicest interior, but still worth a visit.

    I Ate:

    • Buffalo UnChicken Wings : excellent, much like real chicken wings ($8)
    • African Peanut Soup: thick, tasty soup, with great spices ($4)
