About Matsugen

Authentic Tokyo Cuisine & Soba ndles. The cynsure is soba, buckwheat nodles that can be ordered hot or cold, in different textures, with different condiments and dipping sauces. The coarse inaka soba with white sesame sauce is an ideal, ambrosial marriage. There are also grilled meats, shabu-shabu options and a whole lot more, some of it unfamiliar and challenging, most of it prepared and presented with an extraordinary attention to detail. That's a credit to Japan's Matsushita brothers, who run the kitchen; co-owner Jean-Georges Vongerichten.

Went there on a Saturday and was surprised to find it empty. There was only one other table beside ours. The decor is sparse and modern reflecting the austere food. Service was fine, no complaints, but also nothing to rave about. I guess you could say this is what you are looking for in a more upscale place.

    I Ate:

    • toro Scallion roll: Very good ($10)
    • 12 Piece Sushi: Very good and very fresh ($43)
    • Spicy tuna roll: Good ($7)
    • Pork Belly: Delicious ($22)
    • Vegetable tempura: Great, cruncy without being greasy ($12)
    • Rose Escarelli: Dry rose, great with the food ($9)
    • Moscato: Good ($8)
