Looking for a place to eat in LES, we happened upon Slurp, as you may have guessed, the focus is on slurping; it’s a Vietnamese noodle bar. It was a cold January evening and the place was automatically welcoming. The dimly lit décor was enhanced by the warmth emanating from within. We began with some NYC tap water and a bottle of their “Deep Zinfandel” which was very reasonably priced at $40 bucks (and they allow a corkage fee if you choose to BYO).
Antonio has a seafood allergy, so we let the servers know and began to order. For starters, we chose Marinated Pork Dumplings ($7) and the Crispy Wings (about the same). The pork dumplings were just o.k, the outside was a bit too doughy and the dumplings were too meaty. I prefer a thinner skin on my dumplings. The wings, however, were a different story. They were beautiful even without the dipping sauce. They were not overly greasy and perfectly crisp. These were definitely a winner in my book.
For the main dishes we chose the Oxtail Pho ($14) and the Grilled Pork Bun ($15). First things first, do not fill up on appetizers when heading to Slurp. The portions are quite generous. The dishes were both delicious. The Oxtail Pho contains rice noodles, bean sprouts, basil, white onions, scallion, cilantro & lime in beef broth. The aromatics were intense. Before the dish even hit out table, the delicate scent of lime hit my nose causing my mouth to water. The oxtail was tender and the noodles were nicely accented y the texture of the bean sprouts. Finally, the cilantro added a lovely freshness to the whole dish. As for the pork bun, do not expect an actual bun. This dish is plated in a huge bowl. What you actually get is rice vermicelli with grilled pork accented by celery, cilantro, cucumber, crushed peanuts. Again, the pasta was at the perfect point, the pork was nicely glazed and the flavors were in perfect balance.
The servers were attentive, friendly and knowledgeable and my date left happy and without need of an Epipen. Needless to say, the place is highly recommended and we will be back very soon.I Ate:
- Grilled Pork Bun: Delicious ($15)
- Oxtail Pho: Aromatic, comforting, balanced, highly recommended ($14)
- Crispy Wings: Delicious, highly recommended ($7)
- Marinated Pork Dumplings: Just ok, I'd skip on this one ($7)
- Sebastiani Sonoma County Zinfandel: Delicious ($40)
