Don't let the high marks fool you- the Scratcher does not present the best in new cuisine, nor is it necessarily the best place to go on an empty stomach. There's the requisite pub fare, but the best part about The Scratcher is that it is just that- a 'pub'. Easily one of New York's best, if you enjoy a great place to go with your friends, have a few pints, some great conversation, and stumble home after feeling all may truly be right with the world. I've never been to this place in daylight, though I hear they do a great fry-up. I don't know if I could find it, as it's tucked down practically in the basement of some East Village brownstones and the only truly distinguishing feature are the faerie lights twinkling in the barred windows. But at night, it's like you've stepped out of the City for a bit, into a little place where time stops as the night goes on. And hey, the music? Fantastic. One of NY's best secrets.
