Ah, Chino. I used to work just a few miles near the place and as soon as I tried it, I was hooked. Everyone I worked with was hooked.
(l wonder if they make "the patch" for Chino addicts?)
The location is a bit tucked away, and you wouldn't know you found a diamond in the rough at first glance. In fact, as you walk in the door you'll be greeted with a giant panda painted on the walls wearing a sombrero with a Fu-man-chu style mustache.
Don't let the meek atmosphere fool you, the experience is worth while.
If you're a Chino-virgin, the friendly staff has a small taste test area with most of their menu items setup so you can try before you buy!
For those of you who don't know, the driving force behind the underground movement of Chino lovers everywhere rests solely on the unique blend of Mexican-infused-Asian dishes..
and the fact that you can have a Teriyaki chicken burrito.
You heard me right, you can have any item on their menu stuffed in a burrito at no extra cost! Don't expect glamorous dishes, as your food will normally be served in a round, foiled dish, much like those used for hot wings. Hey, don't judge a book by it's cover! People have written songs and poems about this stuff! (you can actually read these on the wall while waiting for your take-out or if you're just plain curious)
At the counter, you're faced with the option of a rice bowl or a combination plate. (unless you just want a burro or quesadilla) Both the bowl and combo plate are served with rice, and they're armed with 5 flavors: White Rice, Jerk Fried Rice (nice n spicy) Chicken Fried Rice, Plain Fried Rice or Pork Fried Rice. The bowl includes one other item, while the combo plate includes 2 other items and a side of beans. (The black beans are a MUST TRY!)
I honestly don't believe you've tried the best they have to offer until you've tried the Jerk Chicken, Jenred Pork and Jade Red chicken.
In conclusion, I've met one or two people that don't care for the stuff. The atmosphere doesn't have as much "flare" as most resturaunts. However, most of the people I've known to enjoy it (and there are plenty) that end up becoming die-hard fans devoted to the spicy black beans and the sweet, spicy Jenred chicken.
It's not quite Mexican..
It's not quite Chinese..
But it's completely delicious.
Did I mention a complementary snickerdoodle with each meal?
Because of friends raving about this restaurant, I chose it as the place to have my birthday dinner celebration. It was SUCH a dissapointment, and it makes me wonder what are people thinking?! First of all, what kind of steakhouse doesn't have T-bones or Porterhouse Steaks on their menu?! The New York Strip I ordered had a funny flavor, and had gristle running all through it. It was amazing! The sauteed mushrooms disappointed. And they pass off mushy French Fries as Steak Fries. Someone sent this restaurant chain a dictionary. Their smoked trout dip appetizer was so runny, you could have eaten it with a soup spoon. (The two fish lovers in our party were not impressed with the flavor.) The lobster bisque was edible only. One fish lover ordered the seared tuna, and felt the spicing they used almost ruined the fish. The other fish lover really liked his bass. The cheese cake platter was good. The service was wonderful. The price was astronomical for the quality of the food. We will never go back.
