Because this place serves up some of the best no-frills Mexican food in this part of town for the price. Yeah, okay. It's on 12th street and Van Buren. Who cares? I've seen expensive cars parked outside many a times. The main point is: everything here is cheap and good. It's as if they have an army of Mexican grandmothers in the back. Well, perhaps not that good, but you may get my point. I've never gone wrong here, except once when I bought a pre-made carnitas. The enchilada combo is somewhat addictive for me, as I've ordered that most every time I've been here. I've also tried the carne asada, several tortas, and of course the tacos. It's all solid. Also, be sure to get a cup of one of the fresh juices they make daily. I recommend the cantaloupe juice.
And if you ask nicely, they'll sell you some beer from the market part of the store to drink with your food.
So, if you're in the area for some reason, be sure to stop by. Otherwise, it's probably not worth the trip, if it's a long haul. But it is tasty, low-key Mexican food.
I fly up from Boca Raton, FL twice a year or Theta Xi reunions in Slippery Rock. I always take the guys to the Coney Island, The best I've found anywhere in the last 30 years! Mark G.
