Although it's located in a strip mall, Uncle Sal's is anything but an everyday Italian Restaurant. Originally opened by mobster Sammy "The Bull" while under protection, the restaurant continues to provide authentic Italian cuisine. Everything I've had here is excellent, from the hot garlic bread you get while you wait for your meal, to the salads, to the pastas, fish and steaks. I especially recommend the Filet Mignon Gorgonzola, the Chicken Cilantro, and the Farfalle con Portobello. In additon to what's on the menu, they have 2 nightly specials. They have a full bar with an ok wine selection. Make a reservation because the place is small and usually full, or you can take your chances of getting a seat in the bar area. This is probably my favorite restaurant in Phoenix.
If you want good italian food, go to Sal's, but make sure you don't have anything else to do that day. We waited about 30 minutes before anyone took our drink order and it took over an hour to get our food. It wasn't particularly busy that night, either. I did notice that this place seems to be occupied by regulars, so maybe we didn't warrant the extra attention since we were newcomers. Again, outstanding food, but plan ahead or get there early.
Just what I like, a warm restaurant, frequented by locals from police to ranchers, and the occassional military. Wonderful selection, from Huevo Ranchero's to monster pancakes.
