I review this restaurant from the standpoint of rarely treating myself to a place with an “executive chef.” Brunch is pricey. My bill came to $40 with drinks, entrée, and a side of fruit. (I usually eat at a place that costs half as much). Café Champagne, however, known to rich and poor, tourist and Seattle resident alike, is a restaurant you must experience.
Café Champagne is located on Post Alley, a narrow, picturesque alley, one block from Pike Place Market. I found it as a tourist accidentally. I was staring at a guy who had rolled a piano onto the sidewalk, and almost missed the small, quaint entry to a simple, elegant terrace that belongs to Champagne and Café Champagne (Seattle is the Mecca of Diverse People and Restaurants). Café Champagne serves brunch, lunch, dinner, and has a Happy Hour. Champagne Restaurant is sister and neighbor to Café Champagne and only serves dinner and has a Happy Hour. Both are located under the Inn At the Market, an award winning hotel with a roof top terrace that overlooks Elliot Bay and Pike Place Market.
I live in Seattle now, and finally got around to treating myself to this French bistro. I had the French French Toast. Yes, I wrote that correctly: the word “French” appears twice in this dish. I would order it again, just to have real maple syrup. I know… I know… I sound provincial, and I am. I’m the kinda girl that loves a restaurant that cooks with beer or wine. So besides the fact French French Toast is served with real maple syrup, I ordered French French toast because it is fried in batter made with bourbon. It was an excellent, simple and elegant dish, like the terrace and décor of Café Champagne.
It was extremely busy for Sunday brunch on a cold, rainy day in Seattle; and therefore, our group didn’t get a lot of personal attention from the waitress. Because it is so busy, it cuts down on the elegance; however, you don’t feel rushed. I ordered a few glasses of champagne and eventually a side of fruit. We must have been there for two hours.
