User Reviews for Heller's Bakery
Heller’s Bakery may be in the big city of Washington D.C. but it gives you the feeling of your favourite small town restaurant. The delicious home cooked taste of their meals and always friendly service make you feel right at home. Everything about their food is just right; eggs cooked to perfection, cheese melted just right, mouthwatering hamburgers. You can’t go wrong choosing a menu item! My last visit to Heller’s, I had a whole day to kill in the area so I spent it there. I chose the Tortilla Salad for lunch which was wonderful. The lettuce was fresh and crisp. For dinner I had the Philly Cheese Steak Sandwich which was deliciously mouthwatering! In between meals I sampled deserts and pastries which were all heavenly. The croissant rolls, the brownies, the scones... you can’t stop at just one! They also have a variety of unique breads. I have yet to try their many cookies but have heard they too are delicious. With their talent at creating the perfect desert, it’s not surprising that they specialize in wedding cakes. All their deserts and pastries are baked from scratch.
Heller’s is apparently a local hotspot in the Mount Pleasant area of Washington D.C. They have been around since the late 1920’s. They were recently featured in the new movie State Of Play. A film crew was there all day preparing for a scene in which actor Russell Crowe walks across the street in front of Heller’s Bakery. Rachel McAdams was there also. While speaking to someone with the film crew, I learned that a scene from a Clint Eastwood movie also took place in front of Heller’s.
If you’re in the Mount Pleasant area, be sure to stop by. Heller’s Bakery is a very unique and wonderful find. My only complain is the lack of easily accessible public restrooms. You have to walk into the basement to get there so it may not be the best place for handicap and elderly costumers. Other than that, it’s the perfect restraint and certainty one of my favourites.
