With over a half-billion eggs recalled this month because of salmonella contamination traced to Wright County Egg and Hillandale Farms, once again the federal agencies responsible for regulating and safeguarding America’s food supply have demonstrated that their real aim is to defend and protect the interests of huge agribusinesses.

Because of their perpetual “See No Evil, Hear No Evil” negligence, the F.D.A and U.S.D.A have now become a national laughingstock and even pose a threat to the health and welfare of the American people. The CDC has confirmed there could now be as many as 1,470 illnesses linked to the salmonella outbreak.

“Food Democracy Now”, a grassroots community dedicated to building a sustainable food system notes that for every 1 person who reports the illness another 38.5 will become sick but never report the illness or be tested. That amounts to over 50,000 Americans that have already been sickened by the largest egg recall in modern history.

The latest information from FDA officials is that chicken feed may be a major contributor to the salmonella contamination. The salmonella samples found in the feed could signal a larger problem of site contamination, said Dr. Joshua Sharfstein, FDA deputy commissioner.

“There is evidence of contamination at the farm. While they have found it in feed, they are not concluding any cause-and-effect relationship,” he said. “There are multiple potential routes of contamination.”
