“His wife was so dismayed about it that she even bought a Breathalyzer.”

Barabara Cordell was referring to a 61-year-old man who rambled into a Texas emergency room complaining of dizziness. When nurses ran a Breathalyzer test, the man’s blood alcohol concentration was an alarming 0.37 percent, or almost five times the legal limit for driving in Texas.

The problem was the man said he hadn’t consumed any alcohol that day, and everyone’s initial reaction was yeah, sure thing, wink, wink.

Medical professionals assumed he was lying, but both Cordell and Dr. Justin McCarthy, a gastroenterologist in Lubbock, were intrigued.
