Avocado Grill in West Palm Beach, Florida is a breezy, retro hangout with seasonal small plates, a raw bar and specialty sushi, plus outdoor seating. We had a chance to talk to owner and chef, Julien Gremaud, who shared with us a few tidbits about the restaurant, their food, concept, and business philosophy. Here’s what we learned:
FriendsEAT: Tell us a little something about your restaurant.
Chef Julien Gremaud: Avocado Grill is the place for Palm Beach County to eat well. The restaurant spotlights small plates with an artisanal twist, specialty ceviche, and a full raw bar. Known for his ultra-seasonal, eco-conscious cooking, we have cultivated a network of local farmers, fishermen, and fruit and vegetable growers to supply guests with the freshest sea-, field- and farm-to-table fare possible.
Serving lunch and dinner daily, with a fabulous brunch on the weekend, it may be hard to imagine a more idyllic way to dine ” either indoors or en plein air on the restaurant’s awning-protected patio just steps from the Intracoastal Waterway.
FE: Are there any Awards you have received? Any you’re particularly proud of?
Chef Julien: Florida Trend Magazine awarded Avocado Grill their Golden Spoon’s “Best New Restaurant for 2015″coveted honor. As the 2014 and 2015 “Open Table Diners’ Choice”award winner and 2014 “New Times Reader’s Choice Best New Restaurant in Palm Beach County”award winner, the restaurant was also highlighted by USA Today’s 10 Best.
Additionally, it garnered three of The Palm Beach Post’s most sought after Critic’s Choice Awards: “2015 Best A La Carte Brunch,””2014 Best New Restaurant”and “2014 Rising Star Chef”for me, ChefJulien Gremaud. I was also a finalist in the South Florida Business & Wealth Magazine’s “Up & Comers Awards”
FE: What is your restaurant philosophy? Is there something that everyone strives for with each action taken at your restaurant?
Chef Julien: We strive to offer the most exciting and innovative dishes and cocktails and providing impeccable service to guests. Every experience at Avocado Grill should be fun and we work hard to make it that way for every guest that walks through our door.
FE: What makes you stand out above the rest?
Chef Julien: Well in to its second year in business and Avocado Grill has no signs of slowing down. The continuously packed restaurant is not only the place for innovative dishes and exciting cocktails, it is also the place to see and be seen.
Nestled into a corner space just off the beaten path in downtown West Palm Beach, Avocado Grill opened in late October 2014. Almost immediately, the restaurant was packed with local diners, travelers visiting the area, and notable celebrities such as Billy Joel and Emeril Lagasse. First opening with dinner seven days a week, the restaurant quickly added in a weekend brunch, and then soon after a weekday lunch. All have been awarded top honors by food critics, media outlets, and the droves of diners who continue to visit the restaurant on a regular basis.
FE: What is your most popular dish? Why do people love it?
Chef Julien: Guests love our Grilled Avocado Wedges. It is a very popular item and it is all Florida! Its the perfect lunch or dinner for summer looking for something not too heavy and filled with good nutrition.
FE: And what is the one cocktail your bartender loves to make?
Chef Julien: We love to make the Kiwi Basil Mojito. It is light and refreshing. We use the freshest ingredients and they make the tastiest cocktail that is perfect for the hot Florida days!
FE: Do you offer any deals such as happy hour specials, brunches, etc?
Chef Julien: Happy Hour is offered daily from 4:30 – 7:00 p.m. and features 2-for-1 cocktails at the bar. Over the summer months, the restaurant has weekly specials including 1/2 price oysters all day on Mondays, half off wine on Tuesdays, and a $5 light bites menu Mon-Wed from 4:30 – 10:00 p.m. at the bar.
