They will all be battling hunger by helping to raise $1 million tonight at the gala for the Food Bank at New York City’s 6th annual Can-Do Awards Dinner. Other celebrities expected to attend are Tom Colicchio, Katie Ford, Katie Lee Joel, Aidan Quinn, Elizabeth Bracco, Helena Christiansen and Christy Turlington.
More than 2 million New Yorkers depend on food banks and the number grows every month. Food companies are being asked to donate items which will be distributed to about 1,000 assistance programs in the NY city’s five boroughs.
“I find it remarkably pathetic that the richest country of all time has hungry people,” said Batali. “It’s perplexing that basic needs of food, health and education aren’t met by our society.” Batali’s wife Susan Cahn inspired him to become involved with the Food Bank. They have served as chairmen of the dinner since 2004.
“What Mario and Susie brought to the Food Bank is a tremendous amount of visibility,” said Lucy Cabrera, the charity’s president. “What would take organizations 10 to 15 years to do through special events, Mario and Susie have helped us do in one year”
