As a little girl, I often dreamed of becoming a model (and a marine biologist, and a lawyer, and a diplomat). I’m sure I am not the only one who often dreamed of becoming a cover girl. To my chagrin, I stopped growing when I turned 11 and have been 5’2″ ever since. I also realized that I had an obsession with macaroni and cheese; so while I’m healthy, I am pretty certain the runway is not in my future.
All kidding aside, looking good is achievable (in a healthy way). Whenever models are interviewed; they are asked to reveal their diet secrets. What do they do to maintain their slim body figure? What diet plans do they follow? What do they eat? Do they even eat? Food and modeling is laced with controversy, but there are quite a few ladies and gentlemen in the field who adhere to healthy eating plans in order to maintain their weight. Most people think that models starve themselves to achieve that skinny, slender look. As we all know; starving yourself is not the answer.
Most female models will tell you that they allow themselves a few small meals a day, may be every few hours. This allows for their metabolism to stay constant. They eat foods that are high in protein but low in calories and carbohydrates. Alexandra Ambrosio, one of Victoria’s Secret angels (who happens to be a mom), has no problem sneaking in a treat or two. How does she maintain her slim figure? She watches what she eats. Alexandra uses portion control for her daily dietary choices (this is what I do as a foodie to maintain a healthy weight of 115-120 lbs at 5’2 inches at 34 years old). This plan allows the person to have and eat whatever they want, but in moderation. One good thing about this is that you don’t actually feel like you are depriving yourself of your favorite treats while getting proper nutrition. She also keeps her body in shape by means of physical activities and working out. Her workout routine is called theBrazilian Butt Lift, which is composed of Capoeira, samba, and aerobics. I use “TheDailyPlate” to count calories and track my work outs. I can tell you that when I stick to it, the pounds drop off. This is the plan that works for me.
Male models, unlike the ladies, have a more relaxed diet plan basically because of men’s body composition. Men have higher muscle mass and lower body fat percentage compared to women. Being models, they still need to watch what they eat. Usually, male models resort to having protein shakes in place of a meal. Marcus Schenkenberg, considered to be one of the world’s highest paid supermodels is open about how the zone diet helps him look and feel his best. The Zone diet is best explained as maintaining a hormonal balance by eating skillfully prepared meals. In zone dieting, proteins do not reign over carbohydrates, following a low-carbohydrate diet plan. The Zone includes foods such as fresh fruits and vegetables, leafy green vegetables, sufficient protein consumption, but a big X mark on processed goods and foods that contain too much salt.
While most models have a less carb, high-protein intake, there’s one thing that they never fail to intake, water. Hydration is very important in maintaining a healthy physique. Water is incredibly important to your metabolism and to eliminate the toxins and impurities from your body.
Remember, being skinny or fit does not mean you have to be unhealthy. Being skinny also does not necessarily mean that you are healthy. There are plenty of thin people with high cholesterol and various health issues. People have different metabolisms, depending on height, shape, body composition, lifestyle, and age. One’s diet plan may not work for all so it’s important to know what works best for you, visit your doctor and do what feels right. While maintaining a great body figure may be what we all truly desire, health should always be on top of all considerations. After all, there is no such thing as the perfect body.
