I love SXSW. I look forward to my yearly trip to Austin each year. It is perhaps one of the most fun networking events for people in tech. What I really look forward to this year is my birthday sushi dinner at Uchi (yup – I celebrate my birthday at SXSW each year) and my Tacos at Torchy’s. If it’s your first time at South By. There are a lot of things you need to know:
Food: If you really want to; you can eat for free. Make friends and find out where all the parties are at. There’s plenty of free booze and drink.
Internet: Bring your own. The internet will be incredibly slow. It’s good to have your own connection.
Did I mention food?: Sure, you can eat for free…but Austin is a city of amazing restaurants. So make room in your budget to explore Austin’s food scene. It’s totally worth it. Here are some of my favorites and some that are offering some killer specials during the event:
Uchi: Some of the best sushi in the US.
Stubbs BBQ & Zero Cater: Austin’s iconic BBQ restaurant and this catering start up have teamed up to promote ZeroCater. They will be handing out cards at SXSW that are redeemable for a free BBQ sandwich and side at Stubb’s. Keep an eye out for a member of ZeroCater (you can follow them on twitter for their location) to get a card. If you haven’t been to Stubb’s, you can read about it on last year’s SXSW blog.
Grubwithus: Grubwithus has secured at least one reservation for dinner every night of the festival at restaurants including The Clay Pit, La Condessa, and Lamberts Downtown Barbecue. Dinners will be 3-course family style meals with 8-10 people dining at a time. The meals range in price from $24-34 with tax and tip included. Not a bad deal at all. Resos can be made via Grubwithus.
Easy Tiger Bake Shop & Beer Garden: Has partnered with the Cooking channel for three nights. They will have food, beer and live music, and a special appearance by Nadia G of Nadia G’s Bitchin Kitchen on Friday & Saturday. First come, first serve. Must be 21 and over. RSVP is for all 3 nights.
Malverde: Waggener Edstrom is hosting their SXSW party there on March 10. There will be food, drinks and music by Quiet Company.
Maria Maria La Cantina Patio: Fluent is hosting Party Rock there (on March 11 – my birthday). There will be a 4 hour open bar, cupcakes, and Mobb Depp.
Love Goat: Also on March 11, Stick Your Finger In It will be hosting bottomless mimosas and food (until they run out!).
