Like so many old guard restaurants that have a great location and view, the food and service at the Golden Mast just don't measure up. My wife and I dined on a recent Saturday evening for a special occasion and the disappointment started pretty much as soon as we walked in the door. Seating and service were very disorganized and the waitstaff seemed to be rushing everywhere all night long, despite the fact that the dining room appeared to be half empty. Inattentive service, a very loud dining room full of overserved revellers and food that was mediocre at best combined for one of the worst dining experiences in recent memory. We started with ostrich medallions and portobello wellington for appetizers. The ostrich was served in a flavorful sauce but was seriously overcooked... to the point of being leathery. The scallops served with the ostrich were not properly cleaned, and were full of sand. The portobello wellington was decent, if unspectacular. The french onion soup also fell flat... pretty standard, very bland flavors. Salad was doused with an excessive amount of house dressing. My wife had the sea bass, which was respectable, if a tad overcooked, with a rather sticky garlic risotto. The roasted duck, listed in the menu as Absolutely Wonderful! was the worst duck I've ever been served in a resturant setting. It arrived looking completely unappetizing and, upon cutting into the chewy skin, the disappointment continued. I cook duck on a regular basis so I'm well-versed in the basic rules one must follow to roast a delicious bird. I suspect that the Golden Mast commited several no-nos that a 1st year student chef would avoid. I suspect the duck is split in half before cooking and dumped into a convection oven in a weak attempt to produce crispy skin. This lets all the moist flavorful fat run out of the bird during cooking and produces a leathery outer layer that borders on inedible. The bird definitely wasn't trussed which is absolutely essential for balancing the cooking of the breast and thigh meat. We asked to see a wine list with our entrees and our waitress never returned to take the order. Upon complaining about the extremely loud diners at the next table, the dry appetizers and duck, and the bad service, the waitress told me the manager decided to take 10% off the price of the duck without ever stopping by the table to solicit our feedback... a very strange way to deal with disappointed customers. We demanded for the bill without eating our entrees... and that took another ten minutes to arrive. In total, our experience at Golden Mast was horrendous from start to finish. If you're looking for unorganized, inattentive service, mediocre banquet food and disengaged management... all served up in a beautiful setting on the shore of Lake Okauchee, then you'll like the Golden Mast. If, however, you're a diner who expects the slightest bit of competence from the kitchen, waitstaff and management when you dine out, you'd be better off at a local chain restaurant than Golden Mast.
