A-1 Oriental Kitchen is a tiny little Chinese restaurant with a few tables and a counter where you walk in and order – they do not have a wait staff. The lovely counter folks have charming Chinese accents and are cheerful and bright when they help you with your order; they are also quite patient, as there are so many good things on the menu it is hard to make up your mind!
A colleague and I walked to the restaurant from our offices to enjoy a quick meal in this tiny aromatic spot. This restaurant is located right on the main street of Canton, so it does not have its own parking lot, but there are metered spaces available in front and public parking lots a short walk away.
We ordered at the counter and had time to chat during the short wait at our table. I noticed that they do a busy take-out business, as lots of folks walked in and used the few tables and chairs for a short wait while their food was quickly prepared. When your food is ready, they call you to the counter to pick it up. It’s served in Styrofoam containers with packaged plastic spoons and forks, so that you can take it with you and also have a ready ‘doggy bag’ if you don’t eat it all.
I ordered from the hot and spicy side of the menu – kum pow chicken. The dish lived up to its name with plenty of spice, chicken, vegetables and rice and a very flavorful sauce. The portion was very generous and I could not eat all of it in one sitting. I enjoyed the remaining food for dinner. This Chinese food was good hot out of the wok and warmed up again later!
I recommend this little restaurant for tasty food, big portions at low prices, quick service and choice of eat-in or take-out.
- kum pow chicken : excellent - spicey and large portion ($6)
