- The freshest cheapest Japanese in Lafayette.
Let me start by saying that there is no way that you could walk into Kokoro and have no opinion of it by the time you walk out. EVERYONE has an opinion! The owner, Tony, makes for the most interesting time you will ever seen in a local establishment in Lafayette. The man is tempermental, irritable, insulting, and often disgusting. I've learned the basic rules of the establishment by now. Never walk in with a hat on your head. You'll be thrown out. I've seen it happen. Never bring your kids in unless they are the models of superior good behavior in children. Never come in and expect to get served within a NORMAL timeframe. You will likely wait 2+ hours for your food. The waitstaff will all but ignore you (because they are babysitting Tony). So, order the big bottle of Saki and settle in for the show. NEVER compain about your food in any way. I've seen this before. Tony's response is to march out of the kitchen, throw your plate back on your table and yell, "WHAT WRONG WITH FOOD? YOU NO LIKE FOOD? GO TO CHINA GARDEN, $6.99!" No joke.
All that being said, the cuisine here is TO DIE FOR. Tony's sushi is all I have ever eat, because I can't imagine going ni there and then walking out without putting it in my stomach. For the price you pay, you get a HUGE plate. I can only ever eat three pieces of my roll. The rest I have to take home to eat later. I was once talking to the bartender (we always sit on the bar side so that we can watch Tony work) and he said "Enjoy the show." Later he came back (when I say later, I mean two hours) and looks at me and says "You have the patience of Job!" I simply said, "The food is worth it." The bartender said, "It's his saving grace!" And truer words have never been spoken.
