A suburb in Baldwin County of Mobile, Alabama known as the Spanish Fort is home to an establishment called the Original Oyster House on 3733A Battleship Parkway that prides itself on the presentation of expertly-prepared seafood. Being located directly above the Mississippi River, it can only be expected that the venue would be in the perfect position to deliver edible marine commodities to patrons desiring seafood and the security of their food’s freshness. The outward appearance of the Original Oyster House is standard fare for an on-the-water dining establishment, with a coat of pale, cobalt-blue paint covering its face and decorations of various aquatic animals modeling on the sides and top of the building.

The establishment does indeed live up to its promise to deliver fresh seafood to patrons looking to sample the marine Mississippi goodness, though comments of the service seem to be hit-or-miss depending on the specific experience of the patron in question. The menu covers the standard wide fare of any establishment that offers its catches of the day, from platters of shrimp and oysters for larger parties to single plates of tuna, salmon and cod available to lone customers or couples. Some of the more popular menu items include the alligator bites, Fried Captain Sampler platter, calamari and fried green tomatoes. Living up to its name, the titular oysters are generally met with a great degree of satisfaction by patrons out to sample them and generally are the main cause for return trips to the establishment.

Pricing for the items in the Original Oyster House are economical, not needing to be met with the same preparation and belt-tightening that some slightly more upscale establishments may necessitate. The nautical atmosphere is perfectly fitting for an entirely casual dining experience that still manages to leave customers with a sense of being treated to something that’s a slight cut above what they’d find at a chain restaurant.

For those wishing to make a trip out of their move to experience the Original Oyster House, a nearby hotel in Daphne called the Comfort Suites is available at a comfortable distance away from the establishment. In order for one to have the best experience possible at the Original Oyster House, it would be wise to sample the actual oysters to get a real sense of what has given the Spanish Fort restaurant its highly respectable reputation.

The Mobile location is a loca l favorite, and I see it featured on national television every once in a while. The Original Oyster house has great seafood - everything from gumbo, to crab claws, shrimp, fish and alligator (tastes like chicken).
The poboys (served with fries and cole slaw) are great, and the soft shell and crawfish versions are something you don't see on every menu.
Grits may be an acquired taste, but they go well with Josh's blackened shrimp (on the "specialties" menu) and the cheese version is great by itself. Desserts include Key lime pie (my all time favorite) and change on a daily basis.
The view is great, the food is superb - The Original Oyster House is a must-visit for anyone who loves seafood.
