The owners, Bob Thornton and his brother Jack, were unable to make the necessary repairs to bring the decades-old facility up to present-day building codes due to insufficient insurance coverage. Despite this setback, the Mai-Kai remains a treasured part of Fort Lauderdale's dining scene. The restaurant, which first opened its doors in 1956, was expanded and upgraded over the years by Bob Thornton. Today, it is run by Bob's stepson David Levy as CEO and his stepdaughter Kulani Thornton Gelardi as CFO. The Mai-Kai offers a unique dining experience, combining delicious food with a lively and vibrant Polynesian show. The package offered to guests includes an appetizer, main course, dessert, and seats for the show, providing a complete evening of entertainment. While the restaurant is currently closed for repairs, it has plans to reopen soon.
